Thirteen Egmont Attractions

Living aboard our boat all summer at Pop’s dock, I see hundreds of sail and power boats heading up and down Jervis Inlet. Many make the long voyage to Princess Louisa Inlet to visit Chatterbox Falls, then back toward the Gulf of Georgia. I want every one of them to stop in Egmont!
Egmont has a number of attractions and is a friendly little town. Here is a list of places to visit, community events and fun ways to spend an hour or a day or more:

1. Hike to the world famous ‘Skookumchuck Rapids‘. Allow approximately one hour to hike each way and take your bottled water. The ‘Chuck’ is best viewed at the maximum ebb or flood – check the best viewing times before planning your outing for maximum changes in water elevation, huge whirlpools, standing wave and strong current flow.
2. Visit the Egmont Heritage Center to learn the local history of this small community – it’s bigger than you might expect! Check the calendar of events, watch a master totem pole carver at work, a Native weaver creating delightful baskets, see video of the black bear who calls Egmont his home and whatever you do, don’t miss my little blue Egmont May Day dress!
3. Shop at Bathgate General Store for fresh meat, vegetables, dry goods, liquor and souvenirs.
4. Dine at the West Coast Wilderness Lodge and expect superb food, service and a fabulous view of Sechelt Inlet and the surrounding mountains.
5. Attend ‘Egmont Day’, held in early June. Enjoy the kids fishing derby then watch the parade – or take part in the parade! Win a cake in an old fashioned cake-walk, have fun at the races, games and the Skookum Burger eating contest. Prepare to enjoy the whole day, then top it off with a salmon barbecue hosted by the Egmont Community Club as a fundraiser to help rebuild the foundation of the Community Hall.
6. Be pampered while staying at a local Bed & Breakfast.
7. Take a High Tide boat tour of scenic Jervis Inlet.
8. Go trout fishing at Klein Lake.
9. Doze in the sunshine on the swim float at Waugh Lake.
10. Sample the famous ‘Skookum Burger’ at the Backeddy Pub while watching the boats, the eagles, the seals, or simply the current flowing through the inlet.
11. Rent a boat and go fishing, wildlife watching, clam digging, picnicking or oyster picking.
12. If you are an experienced thrill seeking, extreme kayaker give the ‘SKOOK’ a whirl or take a lazy paddle to Miller Islet to view the seal colony.
13. Mail me a postcard from the Egmont Post Office to tell me how much you enjoyed your day in Egmont!

Oooh that Skookumchuck Rapids hike looks like a fun one!
