In the 1960’s my ‘Pop’ approached the foreman of BC Forest Products logging camp at Brittain River in Jervis Inlet to ask what they were going to do with their community hall since the camp was closing.

Vic Ramsey, the foreman asked what Pop wanted to do with the building and when Pop said Egmont needed a community hall, Vic said, “Oh, well in that case you can have it for $1.00 – just to make it legal!”

The Egmont Community Hall has been a local meeting place for the residents of Egmont for nearly 50 years, hosting weddings, teas, meetings, memorials, Egmont Day, May Day, dances, parties, classes and more.

As a matter of fact, ‘Pop’ took a one day class there in July 2002 for his Canadian Coast Guard BOAT Operators Certificate! Yes, he passed the test with flying colors at 91 years of age – LOL.

The hall has stood on it’s log foundation since the community members rallied to bring about this important central meeting place, but now requires a new cement foundation as the logs are rotting. The Egmont Community Club has raised over $75,000.00 toward the projected cost of $115,000.00 (which includes a new porch and new wooden framed windows). We are very close to our goal and plan to begin construction in January.

This background information is all leading up to a lunch meeting today at the Backeddy Pub. Beverly Saunders President of the Egmont Community Club, her husband Jim and I met with a very, very generous community supporter, Madeira Marine. Our friends, Rick and Karen King have offered to match whatever amount we raise at our Egmont Saloon Casino Night Fundraiser, up to a maximum of $10,000.00!

Their generous offer has given us a huge boost and we’re very excited about successfully pulling off this event with the idea of making it an annual fundraiser in our newly renovated hall. There isn’t a lot going on in November in this area and it seems people love to gamble.

Egmont is a very small community, with around 300 residents, but we’re mighty big fundraisers when our community is in need!

I’m so very pleased to be part of this fundraiser to preserve our hall, which my Pop was instrumental in obtaining for Egmont.

Pop said to me yesterday, “Will they want me to attend the Casino night too?”

“You bet, Pop – we wouldn’t be getting together in the hall if it wasn’t for your work in the 1960’s! Besides, all the ‘girls’ will be thrilled to see you!”

PS Want to join us for an evening of gambling for fun, good eats, great company, door prizes, silent auction & entertainment – and to admire the hall my Pop bought for $1.00??? Let me know – if you can’t be here, would you like to support my small community of Egmont with a door prize, auction item or even a ‘High Roller’ prize?

What an amazing thing you guys are doing. I’m impressed you’re already so close to your goal and haven’t even had the main fundraiser yet! Hope I can make it.
