Operation Shoebox

I am so thankful for the US military who are fighting to protect the world from terrorism, tyranny and oppression. None of us want to be at war with other countries, but it’s a fact of life in our ever-changing world, so I like to show my support of the troops who give so much to keep us safe. In past years, I bought phone cards while at the post office in Blaine, Washington to have sent overseas.
There is a very simple way to show your support for the overseas troops. Operation Shoebox supports the ‘boots on the ground’ year round with care packages and ships them out either on a one-time basis, or directly connects you with a troop (1 solider= a troop) to interact with for the duration of their tour.
The troops need interaction and support from ‘home’ and a simple way for a civilian like me to show I care is to collect items year round to put in the shoeboxes. It’s as simple as picking up the soaps in your hotel room, pens, dollar store items like toothpaste, toothbrushes and you may work at it year round or make a donation toward the shipping costs. That’s what I’m doing this year.
This year, my friend Dina Riccobono is supporting ‘Operation Shoebox’ and I am writing this post to suggest YOU give her a hand! She and a few others solicited donations of items from many corporations and individuals to send to 50 troops.
They have a packaging party planned – where they will organize all 50 shoeboxes and put the sponsors items and donations together for individual shipment to the troops- on Monday. Orlando Ichiban has been kind enough to donate space for them to use to put the boxes together, and also some discounts on food and drinks. If all goes well, they will livestream Monday, and then Deb Schroeder and Dina will drive all the boxes to Operation Shoebox HQ the first week of December and hand deliver the packages. Dina will be filming that journey as well.
Will you join me in supporting ‘our’ troops with Operation Shoebox? Blog, twitter or be there to help out!!!

ReplyI had a penpal during the Gulf War (his name was Todd and he was in the 101st Airborne) that actually came to visit my family for the weekend when his tour was over. I was in elementary school and all I really remember was that he was Mormon and didn’t drink pop.
Great cause that offers a little bit of comfort during a tough time.

Ignorance must be bliss!
ReplyI didn’t know there were other ways that we could help. I want to know more.

ReplyHey Connie- I put together a group to box up packages once a quarter from donations sponsors and our co-workers send us. You can also adopt-a-troop of your own to send care packages to for the duration of their tour, or be a penpal. Here’s the link to the main OperationShoebox site for more info, and if you want to get involved with our group, you can of course email me at riccs2-at-gmail-com.
We just had another 30k deployed to Afghanistan. Support those troops!
