Power and sail boaters are usually serious board game players. There isn’t much else to do when you are at anchor and the rain is beating on the roof. You go outside, you get wet - your clothes get we - and it takes forever to dry wet coats and boots. So, you stay in and entertain the kids and adults with a game.
I have one precious onboard cupboard full of every type game imaginable, from crib to Backgammon to my new Texas Hold ‘Em set. Storage is hard to come by on a boat and every nook and cranny is used for important ’stuff’. During our years of boating, I’ve stashed quite a collection into my little corner.
Of course we are often alone onboard and Kent doesn’t play boardgames, so I play online backgammon with other online players. I love the fact I can connect with other people around the world to match my wits and the online games take up no space other than my computer which I never leave home without anyway!
Backgammon online is simple to learn and play - even if you are a novice. Download the software, play for free, or for money. There are tournaments to enter, rooms to play and lots of competition. Be sure to read the etiquette and rules before playing. Then join the fun to play others around the world.
BG is the name, BackGammon is the Game!
Do you have a Facebook account? It’s a great way to share photos, communicate, learn and play interactive games with friends and strangers.
I’ve stored lots of photos on Facebook, mainly to save them to a site where I think they’ll be fairly safe (but, yes, I have photos on other sites as well, so as to not put all my eggs in one basket!). I really like the fact I can stay in touch with friends and relatives through simple communications with no expectations. I’m not always good at replying to emails or phone calls… as some of you may know!
Learning is never-ending, especially if you try to keep up to all the new applications available. Where the ideas come from, I cannot begin to fathom - there are some clever, thoughtful people in the world and at last they have a creative outlet which is readily available. I like that about the web!
As for playing games, Scrabulous was the first I tried. I love playing Scrabble or Literati online but found Scrabulous was too slow as most people played erratically - so I had to have 6 or more games going at once to fill my addictive persona quota.
From there, I went on to Pirates. It was cool setting booby traps on deserted islands for other pirates, trying to sink other ships and steal coins, entering the monkey and parrot races, even gambling in the tavern, but it soon got old as it wasn’t a quick game and took a lot of surfing to gain points.
Now, I’m on to Texas Hold ‘em and find it much more to my liking. It’s fairly quick paced and I am able to lose all my points in no time. Of course, then I have to wait until the next day for another free 500 points to be allocated to my account.
I’ve talked to people from all over the world, learning new words, small tidbits about other countries and ways of life. There are interesting people at the tables and of course there are annoying, ‘rub it in your face’, swearing, impatient, know-it-alls. It’s easy to move on to another table any time, playing a friendly game with newbies or a cut-throat game with the ‘big dogs’.
Facebook is a good time-waster for me while I’m sitting in the living room with Kent and Pop while they watch TV!

LEAVE ME A COMMENT TO WIN THIS:
Well, just when I thought I knew it all I discovered a very exciting site!

It has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with boating or with beautiful British Columbia but everything to do with life and friendship and sharing. Bloggy Giveaway was shared with me by Lori of blogging with cents.
Lori quite often has interesting giveaways and contests on her site. This week she’s giving away $50.00! All you must do to enter is leave her a comment. Her contest is one part of a huge contest which you may see at Bloggy Giveaway.
After reading the guidelines at Bloggy Giveaway I decided I wanted to join the fun
by giving away a prize! I like visitors. I like commenters. And I love prizes.
Here is a photo of the prize I’d like to give YOU. (The back is embellished too.)
I plan to make a quilt from men’s ties at some point in my life (I’ve been collecting them for years) and had some lovely burgundy and black silk ties which I used to make this small bag.
I love creating small projects and wanted to practice my newly acquired beading and embroidery skills. The bag, which could be used as an evening purse, a money holder or simply a decorative item, measures 4 1/2 inches by 8 inches and has a button with a velvet loop closure.
How can you win this hand crafted treasure (pardon me while I toot my own horn :)?
Simply leave me a comment. An idependent third party (my 94 1/2 year old Pop) will choose the winner on February 3 2008 by picking a winning number between 1 and however many comments I receive) and I will pop the prize in the mail to you next week - postage free if you are in the USA. International winners may choose to pay 1/2 the postage fee or mail me 5 men’s ties to offset the cost!
Have a great day and cross your fingers and toes for luck!
