Wooden, plastic, fabric or metal?

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Our 5288 Bayliner has standard beige venetian blinds on the windows and they are such a nuisance to clean. The only simple way to clean them is to unscrew every single blind, lay them flat on a picnic table and use a scrub brush, hot soapy water and the water hose.

It is a time consuming job - one I’d gladly give up if I could find wooden blinds to replace them as they would provide a more substantial surface to dust or wipe with a cloth.

My only problem will be deciding which color - do I go dark cherry to match the dark areas of teak or light honey or natural to match the oak floors? Would I be smarter to go with a ‘wooden’ look as plastic might be lighter in weight?

Does anyone have any quick tips for cleaning venetian type blinds? Want to demonstrate? Do I need to have someone come to the boat to measure or will I be able to do it myself? Oh, oh - this is starting to give me a headache…

Electricity Created Without Pollution

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Kent and I drove from British Columbia to Texas - and returned - a 4200 mile round trip. Our return route took us through Oklahoma and I was amazed to see all the wind generatorsproducing electrical power. Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC) near Anadarko, Oklahoma supplies wind generated electricity for 19 of Oklahoma’s rural electric cooperatives. The generators don’t look awfully tall from a distance, but as we neared we realized how truly majestic these 300 plus foot towers with huge blades really were and the amount of pollution free electricity they were creating.

Wind powered generators creating electric energy is a brilliant idea in my mind! There is absolutely no pollution as in the coal burning thermal electric generated plants we saw of West Texas and other areas. Nor is there the perceived threat of a leak from a nuclear generating station.

British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority produces millions of mega-watts of electricity from hydro power, created by dams which were constructed in the 1950’s and 1960’s. There is another dam project on the drawing boards for the Peace River, called Site C, which will greatly increase BC Hydro’s total power production.

I truly appreciate the fact we, in British Columbia use hydro generated electricity which creates no pollution.

Does Your Financial Institution Have an ‘Ethical Policy’?

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Have you ever read the fine print of your financial institutions ethical policies before seeking loans?

I never thought of it! It never mattered where the money might come from to fund my new car, my home, my business or my property - as long as it was available - when I needed it.

Sure, we all do our best to be green by recycling, using our natural resources properly and using recycled products, but have you ever thought of where YOUR money might be used and the type of investments for which it might be used?

Check out the ‘Ethical Policy‘ of this Co-op Bank to learn how and why you may want to question where the loan money comes from and where your ’savings’ are used by financial institutions with whom you may deal.

A competitive loan with an ethical twist might be exactly what you are seeking if you don’t like the idea of using money which may be at the root of human rights abuse.
